Research Abstract |
Stereoscopic display of color images had demonstrated using Axi-Vision image data, a set of color image and depth image, using a depth-sampling and multiplexing system consisting of a moving mirror, a liquid crystal display and a white light LED illumination. However, insufficient stroke and slow response of the moving mirror resulted in an inadequate three-dimensional (3D) appearance of the reproduce images. Based on these experimental results, we got to work on stereoscopic display systems using versatile 3Ddata and optical control devices for the systems. We successfully acquired versatile 3D image data defined in the world (or camera) coordinate system from Axi-Vision image data, where the world (or camera) coordinates were calculated from the image coordinates on the CCD based on the perspective projection theory. Aliasing, an issue from mismatch of image qualities between the 3D image data and the IP system, was effectively suppressed by pre-processing the color Axi-Vision image data using a two-dimensional lowpass filter, which was designed based on analyses of the maximum spatial frequency of the 3D image transformed appropriate for the LCD size and the Nyquist spatial frequency of the IP system. We made presentation of these results at the SPIE and IS&T Symposium Electronic Imaging 2007, held at San Jose, USA, Jan. 2007, and published the paper in the proceeding. We are preparing a manuscript for a journal paper. As for optical control devices, we have got work on polymer MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) using SU-8 photoresist. A binary optic micro fresnel lens array was made using conventional photolithography process and the power of converging parallel laser beam and imaging white light LED was confirmed. An electro-statically actuated grating light valve (GLV) using US-8 was designed. The GLV had a mid gap structure for the moving part. The fabrication process was successfully completed to confirm the function of optical modulation. We are preparing a manuscript to submit a paper to Electronics Letters. Less
