| Research Abstract |
In recent years, modern farming techniques have been introduced into traditional paddy fields in northern Laos. In this study we investigated characteristics of algal communities which indicate changes of paddy field ecosystem.
1. Surveys were conducted in 14 paddy fields in northern Laos. Algae such as Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae were estimated using a culture method. Their cell densities and the numbers of species in rain-fed paddy fields were lower than those in irrigation paddy fields.
2. Diatom cells were counted directly. Total 115 Diatom taxa including some unidentified taxa were observed.
3. In irrigated paddy fields, Caloneis minute, Placoneis undulate and Sellaphora auldleekie which are known to inhibit eutrophic water were dominant during rainy season. Achnanthidium minutissimum was predominant during dry season or in some paddy fields where sometimes suffer from irrigation water shortage.
4. In rain-fed paddy fields, Luticola aequatrialis, Pinnularia obscure, and Diadesmis contenta which have been reported from soils were predominant.
5. Conditions of water supply are reflected in characteristics of diatom communities.
