Research Abstract |
We firstly compared the effectiveness of intensive and moderate intervention, focusing on the frequency of individual educational classes. The subjects were men and women aged 44-69 years living in Japan. We assigned the subjects according to their residences to an intensive life-style intervention group (two education classes per month; n=11) or a moderate intervention group (one education class per month; n=14). After 6 months of intervention, the loss of body weight was-3.5 kg (p<.0001) in the intensive intervention group and-1.8 kg (p=0.02) in the moderate group, and the net difference in body weight loss between the groups was-2.0 kg (95% confidence interval (CI);-4.0 to-0.05; p=0.045). Secondly, we compared the changes of body weight and plasma glucose concentration between carriers and noncarriers of the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the 83-adrenergic receptor gene before and after weight loss interventions. A total of 37 persons (12 carriers and 25 noncarriers for the Trp64Arg polymorphism) participated in the study. There were no differences in body weight or plasma glucose concentration between the two groups at baseline. There were significant reductions in body weight and plasma glucose concentration, when analyzed with the two genotypes combined, but no significant differences between carriers and noncarriers with respect to changes in these variables. The weight change was-2.5 kg (95% CI;-3.6,-1.3) among carriers and-1.9 kg (95% CI;-2.7,-1.1) among noncarriers. The corresponding figures in fasting plasma glucose concentration were-3.9 mg/dl (95% CI;-8.4, 0.6) and-0.2 mg/d1 (95% CI;-3.3, 2.9), respectively. These results suggest that the presence of the Trp64Arg polymorphism may not play a major role in a hindrance to weight reduction, while intensive intervention could produce better results even if the genetic backgrounds were not considered.
