| Research Abstract |
Objective: To Develop physiological or biochemical predictors for cognitive decline among community-dwelling older adults
Methods: The study population included 382 community-dwelling Japanese person ages 70 years and older who participated in a comprehensive health examination June 2004. In addition to conventional medical examination such as blood pressure and routine blood analyses, cognitive function was tested using the Mini-Mental State Examinations (MMSE) and phonological and semantic verbal fluency tests. Also, we examined brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) which is an independent predictor of cardiovascular diseases and serum β_2-microglobulin (β_2-M) which is an independent predictor of total mortality. Results: Poor cognitive function (MMSE<24; phonological verbal fluency test<12 words) was independently associated with the middle tertile of baPWV (1750-2070 cm/sec) by cross-sectional analysis (odds ratio =9.66, 95% confidence interval = 1.15 to 80.93; odds ratio =1.73, 95% confidence interval = 1.10 to 2.74, respectively) but was not significant by 3-year follow-up. On the other hand, high concentration of β_2-M (≧1.5 mg/dL) was an independent predictor of poor phonological verbal fluency (odds ratio =2.09, 95% confidence interval = 1.04 to 4.21).
Conclusion: higher β_2-M might contribute to the subsequent poor phonological verbal fluency.
