Research Abstract

Title: EFFECTS OF HORMONE THERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH ESTROGEN RECEPTOR-EXPRESSING
TUMORS: A STUDY USING POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY
[Summary]
We studied the effects of hormone therapy in patients with estrogenreceptor-expressing tumors using FDG-and FES-based positron emission tomography (PET). In the FDG-PET trials, FDG accumulation did not correlate with estrogen receptor expression, but did correlate with tumor size in the 9 breast cancer patients studied. In the 6 recurrent malignant melanoma patients, FDG accumulation did not correlate with the effects of the DAC-Tam method, which was the chemotherapy protocol combined with the estrogen blocker tamoxifen.
Next, we evaluated the correlation between FES-PET findings and the therapeutic effect in three breast cancer patients. In all three cases, estrogen receptors were expressed in the primary sites and all patients had multiple metastatic sites. In two cases, the FES accumulation was different for each metastatic site; for example, high … More FES accumulation was observed in brain metastases, but no accumulation was observed in bone metastases. In one bone metastases patient without FES accumulation, hormone therapy was not effective, and resulted in much more advanced bone metastases after six months. It was suggested that the effects of hormone therapy may differ according to metastatic site, even if estrogen receptors are expressed at the same primary site. In one case with high FES accumulation in all metastatic sites, hormone therapy was effective. After one year, tumor marker ST 439 was almost normalized in this patient. We investigated the correlation between FES-PET findings and FDG-PET findings in two cases of breast cancer.FDG accumulation was observed in all metastatic sites in both patients; however, hormone therapy was effective in the one FES-positive case but not in the other FES-negative case.
In conclusion, it appeared that FES-PET but not FDG-PET may be useful to predict the effects of hormone therapy. Further examinations with larger numbers of patients are required to clarify the role of FES-PET. Less
