Research Abstract |
The serum concentrations of the N-terminal fragments of the laminin (LN) γ2 chain in 73 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) who were treated at the Saga University Hospital were measured by immunoassay. The results were as follows. 1. The concentrations of the LNγ2 fragments ranged between 14.5ng/ml to 324.2ng/ml, and the normal upper limit was estimated to be 50ng/ml. 2. Twenty five patients (34%) showed increased concentrations exceeding 50ng/ml. 3. No statistical differences were observed between the primary sites of the tumors. 4. The concentrations of the LNγ2 fragments increased according to T classification and the patients with T4 diseases showed significantly higher concentrations. 5. No statistical differences were observed between the N classifications. 6. The LNγ2 fragments concentrations of the stage IV patients were higher than those of the stage I-III patients, however, no statistical differences were observed between the clinical stages. 7. The patients whose LNγ2 fragment levels were less than 50ng/ml before the treatments showed minimal changes after the treatments. 8. The amount of elevated LNγ2 fragment concentrations more than 50ng/ml decreased after the use of curative treatments. 9. Three patients with terminal diseases displayed a continuous increase of the LNγ2 fragment concentrations and subsequently died of the diseases. The serum concentrations of the LNγ2 fragments may prove useful in assessing the treatment results and clinical courses of patients with HNSCCs.
