Research Abstract |
(1) A balanced turbo field-echo (TFE) sequence is a balanced steady-state free precession sequence used for achieving rapid and high imaging. We tested whether this imaging technique using a microscopy coil is applicable to the diagnosis of parotid gland diseases. Consequently, 1) balanced TFE sequence steadily depicted the parotid ducts and the branches of the external carotid artery and the jugular vein. 2) The sequences delineated the locations of parotid tumors relative to the gland and the internal structures of the tumors. Displaced ducts and blood vessels were also observed around tumors. 3) The sequence also depicted changes in the gland parenchyma. where varying sialectatic changes of punctate, globular, and cystic patterns with Sjogren's syndrome; these findings are representative of the severity of the disease. In conclusion, the balanced TFE technique using a microscopy coil is a novel, alternative rapid high-resolution MRI technique associated with high SNRs for the diagnosis of parotid gland diseases (AJR,188:228-232,2007). (2) To evaluate the parallel imaging technique for the external carotid artery and its branches, using the D balanced TFE, 3D phase-contrast (3D PC), and 3D time-of flight (3D TOF) MR angiography sequences. In conclusion, the combination of parallel imaging and 3D PC technique is promising fot face and neck MR angiography. The 3D balanced TFE sequence is superior to the 3D TOF, but effective separation from veins and salivary ducts is needed (J Magn Reson Imaging, in press, 2007).
