Research Abstract |
We newly developed an ultraminiature cordless EMG measurement system, BMS-601 (BMS), in cooperation with Harada Electronic Industry Ltd. to enable the monitoring of nocturnal EMG of the masseter muscles to be performed with less burden of patients. To elucidate the efficacy of occlusal splints, nocturnal EMG of patients with sleep bruxism and temporomandibular disorders were examined. 1. BMS-601 The transmitter unit of BMS contains electrodes, an amplifier, A/D converter, a CPU, a battery and a transmitter. Amplified EMG digital data are transmitted to a removable CF card set in the receiver unit. 2. Validity of BMS in the daytime During tapping, maximum clenching and gum-chewing, distinct bursts were observed in EMG recorded by BMS as well as a conventional polygraph system (PG). RMS values of maximum clenching measured by BMS and PG showed a linear and significant correlation. When distance between the transmitter and receiver unit was 100 cm or less, no artifact signal was observed. It was suggested that the motion artifact of signals during BMS measurements is equal to or less than that during PG measurements during simulated sleep turn. 3. Nocturnal EMG An unplanned period was needed for alterations of structures such as the receiver antenna to eliminate unexpected liner-spike-shape artifact signals at the night time. Therefore, the number of the subjects whose nocturnal EMG data were compared was not sufficient. Nocturnal EMG measurements in successive nights at home became possible and the comparison between the EMG data with and without the splint became easy to be performed for the patient group. In some subjects, the nocturnal EMG bursts decreased when using occlusal splints, while no distinct change was found in some subjects. Though the difference among individuals was possibly involved in these findings, further examinations of many subjects are thought to be needed.
