| Research Abstract |
Objectives:
The purpose of this study was to develop an objective evaluation method at bedside for swallowing:
The ultra-sound diagnostic equipment (US) with a 5 MHz electronic convex sector scanning probe, videofluorography (VF) and endoscope (VE) were used to observe tongue movements in swallowing the test food. To record the swallowing sounds, a heart sound microphone was connected to the ultra-sound diagnostic equipment through a physiologic signal unit. The tongue movements and swallowing sounds were simultaneously recorded on DVD and analyzed by plotting five inflection points (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) of the movement curve and two beginning points of swallowing sounds (S1 and S2). Subjects were directed to swallow the test food (a starch compound mixed with water or pudding)
Results:
In healthy fully dentate subjects from the US-image and VE image, S1 coincided with the white-out in VE-image at swallowing. After the white-out in VE-image, S2 was observed in US-image. In the empty swallowing, S2 was not observed.
In two subjects with swallowing disorder, S2 was not observed when there ware residues of bolus in vallecula and aryepiglottic fold.
Conclusion:
It is suggested that the appearance of S2 indicate the normal swallowing.
