Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is development and evaluation of the nursing intervention for promoting and support family decision-making rearing infants and toddlers with disabilities. According to that result, the support method is discussed adequate for the each sort of disabilities. Based on the literature review, the interviews were administered for 30 professionals; nurses, physicians and case workers, and 12 families regarding the situations of facing on decision-make for their children. Child disabilities include severe medically depend, Autism, physically disabilities and mental retardation. According to the result of interviews for both of professionals and families, especially, the difficulties for the decision-making of Tracheotomy for the children with severe disabilities were the most. The further analysis was administered focusing on that point and the intervention framework was developed and adopted to the nursing practice. The result indicated that the nursing intervention was effective for clarifying families' feeling of merit and demerit and support according to the families' expectation and beliefs if they have any gaps between family members. And the original questionnaire was developed and based on the result of interviews and administered for the both of 76 professionals and 93 families. The result indicated the situation of decision-making differ from the different disabilities; surgery or therapy for physical disability, nursery/school for mental and developmental disability. However, the commonality was showed on support, providing information and families' expectation. The professionals reported specific dilemmas for the life sustaining medicine in the end-of-life, and family acceptance for their disabilities. Therefore, the basic attitude of professionals and necessity system were discussed.
