Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to develop indicators of professional skills for gerontological nursing to create holistic views of health for the elderly. The professional skills for gerontological nursing are as follows ; 1) Indicators of health assessment to create holistic views of health for the elderly, 2) Skills for health care based on everyday ethics, 3)Skills for supporting self-care by an oriental medicine aspect. Data were collected via taped interviews, participant observation from 6 clinical nurse specialists in gerontological nursing and 2 physicians in geriatric medicine, and the case reports for supporting self-care by an oriental medicine aspect. Transcripts and field notes were analyzed qualitatively yielding domains and categories. Three domains of holistic views of health for the elderly were led as a result. These were <health as stability>, < health as actualization> and < health as wholeness>. And the primary indicators of professional skills for gerontological nursing to create holistic views of health for the elderly were identified : 1) Health assessment focused on the balance in life of the elderly and families. 2)Health assessment need to be based on culture and reciprocity between elderly and health care professionals. 3)The skills to be along the intention of the elderly and the actualization of inherent and acquired human potential were important to create holistic health for the elderly.
