Research Abstract |
This study focuses on clarification of the relationship between 1) changes in Primipara bonding during the first year postpartum, and 2) such factors as the mother's personal attributes with respect to bonding, the stress of child rearing, and the mother's ability to manage stress. Observing ethical considerations, the survey was conducted at a maternity clinic in F-City via interviews and mail questionnaires. The subjects were postpartum mothers. The questionnaires included 1) a questionnaire on bonding, 2) SOC, 3) EPDS, 4) a questionnaire on child-rearing stress and life events, and 5) a questionnaire on demographic characteristics. The survey was conducted from February, 2005 to February 2007. There was a total of 2497 subjects, with 2135 respondents. The mothers were, for the most part, low-risk cases. The following are the Primipara results. There was a total of 1047 analysis subjects. Mean age was 28.9±4.4 years. The bonding score was 2.3±2.1 at discharge and 1.6±2.4 at one year. There were significant differences in the bonding score at discharge, three months, six months, and one year. Bonding became more positive during the first year postpartum. The SOC score was 61.9±10.7 at expectant mothers and 68.4±12.7 at one year. There were significant differences in the SOC score during pregnancy and at one month, three months, six months and one year. Stress-management abilities slowly improved during the first year postpartum. Stress-management abilities slowly improved during the first year postpartum. The EPDS score was 5.5±3.6 at discharge and 3.8±2.8 at one year. Mental condition was worst at discharge and 9.6 to 18.1% of the subjects experienced depression during the first year postpartum. Housework and child rearing were a large burden. Mothers need help with postpartum stress.
