Research Abstract

[Purpose] By examining the stories of drug addicts, I described obstacles to return to the life without any substance and major characteristics of how to deal with problems when facing these obstacles, and considered the effective approach to help people with drug addiction in recovery. [Method]Qualitative method with semi-structured interview. I asked a Peer Staff in drug addiction rehabilitation center to introduce clients who lived in community and had attended Self-Help groups and/or recovery programs. Semi-structured interview was assigned to 11 clients (7 men and 4 women) who consented to this study. With their agreement, all interviews were recorded to make detailed scripts, and collected data was coded multiple times and then analyzed inductively. [Results]Of 11 subjects, I focused on 4 female subjects to analyze their life stories. All 4 female subjects had experiences that their daily and social lives had corrupted due to substance abuse; however, their lives has improved with the self-help and help of others. Each life story focused on different aspects: "the reason why I used drugs," "craving," "primary problem," and "love and sympathy." [Discussion]lt can be considered that drug use cannot be stopped when trying to stop, but when subjects feel empathy of others and safety. Substance abuse is deeply related to one's feeling of difficulty to live, and what is needed is to establish the emotional safety and relationship that they can live without any substance. In this perspective, the process of building such environment and improving the ability of self-care might co-occur. [Implication]1 described and analyzed the stories of 4 female subjects in this study, and, in the next research, I will examine all data to attain the deeper understanding on effective way to support drug addicts.
