Research Abstract |
Aiming at developing a preventive care program that can attain participation of elderly males, we conducted a program for the male elderly of early part, consisted of total 6 sessions with a help of the local government. In implementing the program the following points were considered; (1) Males only classes, (2) To have males participate themselves in planning the program, (3) Some manipulation on naming the program (so that the care prevention is not on the front), (4) Invitations made individually by some close individuals, (5) To insert cooking in the program, (6) To make the objective of each session clear, (7) To assign some role to each participant. While cooking and tooth care were included along with a brief lecture inserted each time offering information of the local community, the program was implemented with an intention of making friends. As a result, 20 people participated for the capacity of 20, with almost no reduction in participation rate seen every time. According to the evaluation by a questionnaire, some changes were seen relative to obtaining new knowledge, starting some new activity for good health and etc., in more than half of participants. However, no meaningful change was seen between the program's start and its end, relative to the reduced risk of being in a state of care required, measured by Long-term Care Risk Assessment Scale for the Elderly. Generally positive evaluations were made according to the free comments. Regarding the result of no change in the risk of being in a state of care required, we think there was a problem in the program period. While there remain some issues such as expanding into local communities, we believe the program of high satisfaction was able to be implemented according to the subjective views by male participants, suggesting the possibility of the program that can attain male participation.
