Research Abstract

The Interactive Room : Development and evaluation of an environmental space for experiencing separation and integration of visual and kinesthetic sensations
In the previous years, we have created "ThinkingSketch", a drawing tool that interacts with the user. ThinkingSketch is an application software that generates design images quasi-automatically based on interaction between the user and the computer program. The user draws seed patterns by free-hand manipulations of a mouse, then generates various design images by transforming and arranging the original patterns. Thinking Sketch outputs images instantly, thus the user can repeatedly examine one's own artworks and reflect his/her design ideas by interacting with the computer. As a result, the user can explicitly describe his/her own artistic drawing style in the form of the constraint rules of image generation. The present project was to create an Interactive Room, a large-scale environmental space that is perceptually experienced by t … More he interaction between the user and a computer in which our previously developed image-generating system is installed.
The Interactive Room is a media for artistic expression in which the user-computer interface is arranged in the environmental space with which the user experiences separation and integration of visual and kinesthetic sensations. In the first year of this project, we realized sensations of floating, moving, being absorbed, and being oppressed, which are induced by interaction between the user's movements and the Interactive Room. These results show the potential of this system to apply for media art.
In the second year, we developed a hardware of the Interactive Room together with a software and digital archives for the room. The attempt was integrated as a prototype of the Interactive Room, and this installation was exhibited at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan, 2nd September through 9th October, 2006. Approximately 45,000 people visited during the 40 days of exhibition, resulting in good feedback for the installation. It became clear that our approach is also usable in information editing in the cyberspace.
This finding motivated us to do research further after the project was over. Currently we study "Information Compilation by Access" with engineering researchers in information technology and artificial intelligence. Less
