Research Abstract

本研究は、新しい超流動・ボース-アインシュタイン凝縮現象の発見を目指し、ナノサイズの微細空間に閉じこめた水素分子(H_2)に期待される量子効果を、圧力温度相図の決定と熱的測定から実験的に調べるものである。水素をナノ細孔に閉じこめると固化が抑制されて過冷却液体が実現し、三重点の温度が低下し、場合によってはヘリウムと同様に、三重点が消失する可能性がある。
前年度の定積圧力測定で、圧力容器内のバルク固体が空洞を生じることに起因する圧力の異常な振る舞いが観測された。この問題を、一定圧で結晶成長が可能なクライオスタットを開発することで解決した。本年度はこの新しい装置を用いて、孔径2.5および5nmの2種類のナノ多孔質ガラス中水素の定積圧力測定と、熱的異常の観測を行った。
その結果、多孔体中の液体水素は、その大部分が9-10K付近まで過冷却された後固化することが判明した(固化温度は孔径に依存して少し異なる)。圧力温度相図上の固液共存線は、バルクの固液共存線を低温側にシフトさせたような形をしており、期待した量子効果に伴う三重点の大きな低下は観測されなかった。しかし、一定の熱流入量で温度スイープをする際に温度変化の異常が幅広い温度域で観測され、その振る舞いから、細孔内の水素の一部分は、7K近くまで過冷却液体として保持されることがわかった。この7Kという温度は、水素に理想気体モデルを適用したときに予想されるボース・アインシュタイン凝縮温度、6.6Kに近い。この少量の水素は、不均一細孔中の孔径の小さい領域に存在すると考えられる。従って、孔径に分布をもつ多孔質ガラスではなく、均一孔径を持つ多孔体を用いることで、大きな過冷却さらには量子液体効果が明瞭に観測される可能性がある。これは今までの超流動水素探索実験では得られなかった、新しくかっ重要な知見である。
