Research Abstract

本研究課題では、海産緑藻を研究材料にして、理論・実験の両側面から異型配偶の進化のメカニズムを研究した。その結果、これまでにない新しい発見と深い考察が得られた。潮間帯上部に生育する多くの海産緑藻の配偶子は、雌雄同型もしくはわずかな異型で、雌雄共に2本の鞭毛と眼点と呼ばれる光受容器官を持っており、放出されると直ちに正の走光性を示して海面に向かって遊泳を始める。私は、ヒトエグサを用いた接合実験を行って。配偶子が示す正の走光性は、雌雄の配偶子が遭遇する場所を3次元空間から海面直下の2次元平面に限定することによって接合の効率を高めるための適応的な行動であるという仮説を裏付ける証拠を得た。また、これらの種の雌雄の配偶子の放出は、走光性を効率的に利用することのできる昼間の干潮時に雌雄で同調的に起こるように、化学伝達物質を介したこれまで報告されていなかった新しい機構によって制御されていることを明らかにした。さらに、イワヅタ目のハネモの雄性配偶子は、小型で高速で泳ぎ回りながら雌性配偶子を探索するものの、走光性を示すことができないことから、「正の走光性を示す雌性配偶子と、走光性を示さない雄性配偶子が効率的に遭遇できるのだろうか?」という疑問を持って詳細な配偶子の行動実験を行った結果、海産緑藻で初めて雌性配偶子からは雄性配偶子を誘引する性フェロモンが放出されていることを発見した。これらの結果に基づいて数理模型を構築し、海産緑藻における異型配偶子接合の進化機構に関する考察を行った。現在、分子系統学的解析結果と併せてさらなる詳細な考察を行っている。
