プラズマ加熱と粒子加速が銀河・銀河団形成に与える影響

Research Abstract

本年度は銀河団中に存在する天体が、銀河団に充満するプラズマ(銀河団ガス)に与える影響を中心に調べた。
多くの銀河団の中心には、太陽の10億倍もの質量をもつ巨大ブラックホールが存在するが、まずこのブラックホールの活動で発生した衝撃波が、銀河団ガス中を伝播するときに何が起こるか理論的に考察をした。その結果、衝撃波面で一部のプラズマ粒子が加速され、さらに加速された粒子からは、シンクロトロン電波放射やガンマ線が観測されるはずであることを示した。この予言は2008年度に打ち上げられるGLAST衛星によって検証されるであろう。また衝撃波が銀河団中の銀河を通過するときに、銀河のガスを剥ぎ取ることでその銀河の星形成活動を停止させることも示した。また巨大ブラックホールの活動で、銀河団ガス中に発生したMHD波が、銀河団ガスを加熱することをMHD数値シミュレーションで示した。
さらに観測の立場からは、米国のChandra衛星を使い、銀河団中の巨大ブラックホールが銀河団ガスに残した過去の活動の痕跡(バブル)を観測した。その結果、バブルの位置はブラックホールの活動が終了してからかなり移動していることを明らかにした。
以上の研究は、銀河団中の巨大ブラックホールの活動が銀河団ガスに多種多様な影響を与えていることを示したことで重要である。
