Research Abstract

本研究は電子スピン共鳴(ESR)により、スピン系における低エネルギー励起を本来禁制遷移である基底状態から励起状態への直接遷移を観測することに特化した極めて独創的な測定を目標としたものである。初年度である17年度は主に測定環境を整備することに集中した。ESR測定自体は広く一般に用いられている手法であるが、本研究では通常の強磁場-高周波ではなく低周波ESRを強磁場下、極低温下で行うことが最大の特色であり、ヘリウム3ガスを凝縮させて最低到達温度0.5ケルビンを実現、また、現有する9テスラ超伝導マグネットを併用しての測定を行う。科学研究費補助金を有効に活用し、ヘリウム3ガス冷凍機、ガスハンドリングシステム、QバンドESR測定用プローブを自作し、標準試料(硫酸銅)を用いたテスト実験を終えた後、平成18年度は実践的な測定を行った。具体的には測定の対象とした通称CHpCと呼ばれるCu^<2+>(S=1/2)の量子スピンギャップ系において、当初の目的通り、基底状態からの直接遷移を観測することに成功した。成果はすでに物理学会において口頭発表済みであり、まさに現在、学術雑誌への投稿を準備している。
本来であれば、本研究において開発に成功した測定装置の開発は、数百万の予算では極めて困難な課題であるが、その分を時間と労力と技術力と情熱によって補うことで実現することができたと自負している。本測定装置のアプリケーションは広く、多くの国内外の研究者から共同研究のオファーがきており、今度も更なる研究成果が確実に期待できる。
