Research Abstract

微生物起源の薄層状堆積物(バイオマット)は,少なくとも35億年前から形成されてきたと言われている。バイオマットの中では異なる種類/メタボリズムを持つ微生物が共生システムを形成し,炭素、硫黄、鉄などの物質やエネルギーのやりとりを行っている。このようなバイオマットを研究対象として,鉄、硫黄、炭素の生物地球化学サイクルの進化を理解する(微生物圏の生態系や環境因子を探る)ことを目指すのが本研究である。中でも,バイオマット中の鉄循環の理解を深めることは,鉄代謝が地球史初期の微生物活動において重要なプロセスであることより,微生物進化及びその環境因子を探る上で特に重要である。微生物代謝の際には鉄が大きな安定同位体分別を起こすことから,地球史を通じた鉄循環を理解する際には,鉄の安定同位体地球化学が非常に有効なツールとなる。
本年度の研究では,(1)大陸でのバイオマット形成微生物活動(有機酸による鉄の溶脱)とそれに続く鉄酸化物の無機的沈殿が形成に重要な役割を果たしたとされるラテライト(鉄濃集層)の成因について,約22億年前の掘削試料を用いて行った鉄同位体地球化学に関する研究成果を"Earth and Planetary Science Letters"誌に発表した。本論文は,2007年4-6月に同誌に出版された約150本の論文中でダウンロード数で第9位を記録し,"Hottest ArticleTop25"に選出される栄誉を得た。次に,(2)西オーストラリア・ピルバラ地方の約32億年前の黒色頁岩をターゲットに陸上掘削を行った。(3)現代のバイオマットの鉄一硫黄一炭素の循環について2本の論文を投稿した。(4)鉄同位体地球化学に関する国際学会での講演を3回,海外の大学でのセミナーを3回行った。
