Research Abstract

社会性昆虫において、コロニー内の高い血縁度は集団の統一性の維持に不可欠である。しかし、血縁選択の考えに基づくとコロニーにとってコストになるはずである遺伝的多様性の増加をもたらす現象が維持されている。これに対し、コロニー内の遺伝的多様性が増し、異なる系統の病原体に対して感受性の低い様々なタイプの個体が存在することで、病原体のコロニー全体への致命的な感染を抑制する利益があるためだという仮説が提唱され、検証が試みられてきた。ヤマトシロアリ属の近縁種であるアマミシロアリ(R.a)とミヤタケシロアリ(R.m)は鹿児島県奄美大島に同所的に分布している。両種は有翅虫の群飛をほぼ同時期に行い、朽木にコロニーを創設する。さらに両種は実験室内において種間交雑が可能である。これを利用して、種間交雑コロニー創設による遺伝的に異なる個体の存在が、コロニーの生存率を高めるかを検証した。R.a、R.mの有翅虫を用いてコロニーを創設させ、3カ月後の生存率を種間交雑創設と種内創設で比較した。2006年時には、種間交雑コロニーの生存率が、R.m同種ペア創設コロニーと比較して有意に高かった。2007年に再び行ったところ、いずれの組み合わせにおいても生存率に有意な差はみられなかった。これは、特定の病原体に対して耐性のある有翅虫と耐性を持たない有翅虫のペアによるコロニー創設において、栄養交換やグルーミングなどの社会的交流を介して、耐性を持たない個体が致死的な感染を回避したためだと考えられる。同種の外交配と近親交配によるコロニー創設の比較では、抵抗性が遺伝的に異なる個体間の社会的交流による耐病性獲得の効果を検出することが困難であったが、近縁種の交雑コロニーによって、その効果が顕著に表れた。
