Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Carried out an extensive survey of social impacts of large-scale coal mining and coal transportation in Mongolia’s southern Gobi-desert region. The full report was published in Mongolian and presented to local government etc., partial results were published in international media sites. It provided a range of reccommendations to improve the labour conditions, manage dust impacts, and protect the rights of local herders. Importantly, as a result of the study, a local consultative mechanism was established.
Co-authored a teaching case at Simon Fraser University to present the lessons learned from the Mongolian case and share good practice on increasing long-term benefits from mining for local communities.
At Tohoku University,we discussed about exploring the life of closed and abandoned mines in Japan and had scoping visits to several closed mines, mainly to explore their social and sustainability dimensions. I published a photo-essay on one of two mines that I visited and shared it through GOXI network, a global online portal.
Organized Mongolia-Japan workshop at the Institute of Gecoecology and Geography of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) to forge research collaboration between Tohoku University and the MAS.
Dr. Dalaibuyan presented his research at a special monthly talk at the Sustainable Minerals Institute in Australia, one of the leading research institutes in the world in the field of mining and sustainability.
