Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Martineau博士は,北米・大西洋・欧州域において最も卓越する季節内気圧変動の10年規模変調分布,並びにそれと相関する背景循環の長期変動場の特定に成功し,これを論文にとりまとめた.さらにその実体である「北大西洋振動」に伴う大規模な大気循環偏差の維持過程について,最新の長期観測データ(大気再解析データ)に基づく再検証の結果,北大西洋振動に伴う循環偏差は,僅かではあるが上空ほど南西に傾く傾圧構造を有すること,及びこの構造により循環偏差が有効に熱輸送を行うことが明らかとなった.この熱輸送は背景のジェット気流を横切る強い気温勾配を緩和させようとすることで,その気温勾配に伴うジェット気流の有効位置エネルギーを循環偏差へと変換し,効率的に循環偏差を維持させる働きがあることが見出された.これは,多くの大気科学者・気候学者が着目する北大西洋振動の維持過程の本質を捉えた画期的な成果であり,論文として取り纏めた.これらの成果は「国際地球物理連合(IUGG)2019年総会」でも発表されている.
