Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は、霊長類の糞の粒度と栄養価のデータから、生息地の攪乱程度を推定する手法を確立することである。多くの霊長類種が絶滅の危機に瀕しており、野生霊長類の生息地の攪乱程度の簡易で迅速な定量化手法の開発が求められている。野生霊長類の糞は、野外でも比較的容易に収集が可能であり、糞粒度と栄養価は、そこに生息する霊長類の生活を反映する指標となり得ることが期待される。よって温帯域に生息し、食物の季節性が明確なニホンザルをモデル生物として、季節による摂取食物の変化にともない、どのように糞の質が変化するのかを検討することを目標とした。
採集したニホンザルの糞の粒度分析を実施した結果、季節による違い、また生息環境の違いによりその糞粒度に差が見られることを発見した。低繊維で消化効率の高い食物を摂取する季節には糞の粒度は細かくなる傾向が見られた。生息環境による粒度の違いについては、現在、衛星写真より解析している植生データと合わせた分析を実施中である。実施した糞粒度の分析結果から、糞の粒度はおおむねサルが摂取する食物種の質を反映していると考えられる。本研究より、糞粒度が森林の質を定量化するための指標となり得る可能性を示唆する結果が得られたと言える。
