Outline of Annual Research Achievements

クスノキ科木材の光学顕微鏡木口面画像のデータベースを構築し、機械学習による樹種特性の抽出を試みた。GLCMやLBPなどテ クスチャー特徴量に変わり、回転や拡大にロバストで、画像上のエッジやコーナー、またはブロッブなどを特徴量として捉えるSIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform:スケール不変特徴変換) を検討した。当初は、一画像を代表とする128個のベクトルを用い、その識別性能や解剖学的な特徴量との関連を求めたが、複雑な木材の形状やパターンを扱うには情報が少ないと判断し、BOFモデルの構築を試みた。BOFとは、一画像殻得られる全てのキーポイントの特徴量をクラスタリングし、特徴的な特徴量をいわば辞書代りにして、それぞれの特徴量の頻度を、画像の特徴として取り扱う手法である。この手法の導入により、識別精度が向上するのみならず、識別根拠として細胞同士の相関関係が、樹種固有の特徴として捉えられていることを統計的スコアにより結論できた。さらに、SPM (Spatial Pyramid Method) により、年輪内の細胞形状や配列の特徴の差がより明瞭に引き出せることを見出し、特に管孔性の相違を明瞭に捉えることが可能となった。このような研究を通して、樹種固有の画像特徴量から、従来の解剖学とは異なる 視点で樹種特性を定量的に評価することが可能となり、系統発生や組織学研究のみならず、物性や材質推定などへの新しい木材科学の 切り口となる見通しを得た。一方、東アジアの文化的、 歴史的に貴重な木製品の専門家に頼らない識別法確立できるという意味からも、東アジアに特有の用材観や歴史、ひいてはわが国の固有 の木の文化の研究に弾みをつけると予想される。
