Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research was performed during 47 months with the goal of finding a novel way of mastitis diagnosis in dairy cows in a completely non-invasive manner using near infrared spectra of saliva and udder tissue. The analysis showed that spectra of saliva could not allow the detection of disease, but the udder tissue spectra were informationally rich. The research was expanded to collect also milk samples, and to include, beside detection of mastitis, detection of ovulation period and pregnancy and measurements of milk components. Discrimination analysis and regression analysis with goals of detection of disease and physiological states was performed using milk and udder spectra. In addition, measurements of fatty acids content was detected as possible. It was not previously known that individual fatty acids content can be determined based on the near infrared spectra and water-fatty acids interactions. The research period resulted in several review papers, original scientific articles and book chapters which presented aquaphotomics principles, aquaphotomics analytical methodology as well as original scientific findings resulted while fellow was working on given assignments which are expected to be published in near future. The collaboration was continued after the fellow completed the fellowship.
