Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY2018, this project progressed in testing the trade-off between the costs and benefits of social interactions as they relate to information transmission and infectious disease. The main activities were: (i) continued tweaking of our model of social network evolution in consideration of the above-mentioned costs and benefits; (ii) trips to Scotland to initiate collaboration on a project involving fruit flies and then running the designed experiments to observe social interactions when target individuals are artificially infected with bacterial pathogens; (iii) the continued work on a manuscript documenting dynamics in how social networks influence disease transmission at different stages of an epidemic. The empirical fruit fly data will be critical to test parameters of such models.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Although we made good progress on the theoretical development of the project, ie in the agent-based models created to test the trade-off between costs and benefits of sociality, we were delayed in our empirical experiments involving fruit flies, which was conducted in France. There were difficulties with the experimental apparatus that hindered progress in the limited time we had in the lab. However, we were able to collect data that can be used for the purpose outlined above. Additionally, the JSPS fellow ended her fellowship in February 2019, roughly half a year before the end of the program, to assume a position abroad. This has slowed down progress of the project but we continue to work toward analyses and manuscript preparation nonetheless.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Since the fellow has terminated the fellowship, there will be no more work done with regards to this specific JSPS-sponsored project. However, we continue to communicate about development of the models and use of the empirical data toward manuscript preparation and eventual publication in scientific journals.
