Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Neuron activities were recorded from the primary visual cortex (V1) of the macaque monkey performing a visual fixation task while stimuli were presented in a metacontrast masking paradigm and in a condition when perceptual filling-in is induced at the blind spot. Both these conditions correspond to those in which dissociation exists between visual stimuli and perception. We also recorded neuron activities in the metacontrast paradigm from the inferior temporal cortex (IT). In the metacontrast, most neurons in both V1 and IT exhibited activities that does not correlate with the backward masking effects observed in perception. In the filling-in paradigm, activities were observed in both deep and superficial layers at the blind spot region in V1 when perceptual filling-in occurs at the blind spot.
