Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this proposal study, we explored novel multiferroic coupling phenomena and developed novel multiferroic materials. Main achievements are listed below. 1. We developed a novel magnetic quadrupolar system showing magnetoelectric and optical magnetoelectric effects. 2. We clarified the origin of magnetoelectric coupling in a conical spiral multiferroic with resonant x-ray diffraction. 3. We successfully visualized domain structures due to ferroaxial order. 4. We clarified a ferro-chiral phase transition in terms of crystal structure and optical property. 5. We achieved room-temperature magnetoelectric effect in a liquid crystal.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の成果は，従来のマルチフェロイクスの枠を超えた新たなフェロイック物性実現の足掛かりとなるものと位置づけられる。フェロアキシャル・フェロキラル物性に関して，従来のフェロイック物性と同レベルのドメイン制御性が実証・確立することになれば，結晶学・物性物理学の教科書の一章を新たに追加するような新たな研究分野が立ち上がるような意義があると考えられる。また，本研究で明らかとなったフェロアキシャル物質における電気旋光効果などの特異な光学特性は，強磁性や強誘電性など従来のフェロイック物性と同様に新規なメモリや光学素子などといった応用への展開につながるものと考えられる。
