Outline of Final Research Achievements |
With the rapid proliferation of the Internet, many people selectively read news on so-called social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, outside the realms of conventional mass media. This means that news appears in the same flow of information as private chats and intimate conversations. This study conducted semi-structured interviews in five countries (Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the United States) to explore the transformation of the ways in which people receive and consume news. It discovered changes in their sense of trust in news and their normative political consciousness in democratic societies. At the same time, it identified unchanged aspects to which people are accustomed, such as the gendered ways they use mass media at home. The project resulted in a number of presentations at conferences, articles including six papers in reputable English journals. We won three international awards and the principal investigator published a book in Japanese.
