Outline of Final Research Achievements

Field data collections and experiments were conducted to enhance understanding of spatiotemporal variations of physical environments and chemical compositions of particulate organic matter (POM) in Shizugawa Bay. Based on analyses of long-term high-resolution reanalysis datasets, some notable processes, such as long-term trends and stratifications, in the study bay were also found out. Our results support that the fatty acid composition of POM can be a useful indicator to capture responses of primary production, respiration, and oxygen consumption to environmental changes in inner bay systems.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

環境科学分野における分析・解析技術の発達にともなって,海域環境中の有機物の生物的起源・空間的起源を詳細に分離し,大規模なデータに基づいて物質動態や食物網を解析することが可能となってきた.しかし,それらの化学マーカーと海域における物理的・生物的諸過程の関係についての理解は未だ不十分である.そこで本研究では,様々な環境変動と生物学的諸過程の間に介在する粒状有機物の生体分子(特に脂肪酸)組成の変動についての調査や実験を行い,それを内湾の環境・生態系モニタリングに利用することの有効性について検討した.これは,環境変動に対する地域社会の影響緩和と適応を支援するための研究と位置づけられる.
