| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research project "Global populism in comparative perspective," in which ten political scientists in Japan participated, we made a comparison between European countries, the United States, and Japan. Especially after 2010s, populist political movements and parties gained much support in most of these countries,and some rose to power.It is pointed out that in most European countries Euroscepticism plays an important role to mobilize voters to vote for a populist party.As a result of our research, we published a book "The Populist Challenge"(Tokyo: Iwanami Shoten, 2020).

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本科研では、共同研究の成果を取りまとめた論文集『ポピュリズムという挑戦 －岐路に立つ現代デモクラシー』を2020年2月末、岩波書店より刊行した。同書においては、欧米日におよぶポピュリズムの歴史的展開と相違、イデオロギー的特徴、政党構造など、各国におけるポピュリズムの態様を容易に概観できる叙述を盛り込んでいる。これにより研究者はもちろん、学生・社会人など、世界のポピュリズム現象を広く理解することを望む読者層に幅広く読まれる本となった。また研究メンバーは新聞・テレビなどにもしばしば登場し、ポピュリズムをめぐる議論や現実政治の動きについて、学術的知見をもとにコメントを行っている。
