| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have studied how free trade policy would be supported domestically, by analyzing the international survey data as well as conducting originally designed survey experiments in selected countries: Japan, Korea, US, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Latvia and Estonia. We found two important mechanisms to increase support for free trade among people, recognition of consumer benefits and national security concerns. Our finding sheds new lights on the "embedded liberalism" hypothesis emphasizing employment concerns and compensation policy.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
第2次世界大戦後の世界経済の繁栄を可能にした自由貿易体制が急速に揺らいできた。ヨーロッパやアメリカにおいて自由貿易への反発はかつてない高まりを見せている。一方、TPPをはじめ自由貿易体制を再構築する試みも続いている。今後、国際的な自由貿易体制が維持されるか否かは、単に国家間の外交交渉によるのではなく、まさに各国内において自由貿易政策が支持されるか否かによる。本研究は、国民の間で自由貿易体制が支持される条件を国際的な世論調査データにとどまらず最新のサーベイ実験手法を用いて分析し、自由貿易体制が存続しうる可能性を明らかにした。
