Outline of Final Research Achievements

Three groups of children, school-age, late school-age to junior high school (follow-up study after RTI-model intervention), and adolescents (college students) were investigated using questionnaires, literacy assessments, cognitive psychological tests, and neurophysiological methods. In addition, a genetic search was conducted to elucidate the biological background.
In the school-age group, eye movement measurements and event-related potentials were used to confirm changes in brain function during reading proficiency in school-age period. The follow-up study revealed a relationship between pre- and post-intervention reading performance and improvement, as well as between Japanese and English phonological awareness and acquisition of English literacy. In the adolescent group, an association between English learning difficulties and Japanese reading difficulties was suggested. The genetic analysis revealed a gene mutation in one family, which has been reported in other foreign families.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究を通し、限局性学習症(発達性ディスレクシア)の学童期から青年期にかけての発達軌跡の一端を明らかとすることができた。このことは、学童期に発見された発達性ディスレクシアに対し長期的視点に立った支援を行う上で有用な知見を提供する。神経生理学的研究については、感染拡大のために困難のある群を対象とした研究が行えなかったが、困難のない日本人母語話者の仮名および第二言語である英語の読み習熟に関する脳機能の変化を明らかにすることができた。この点も本研究の学術的な意義である。
