Outline of Final Research Achievements

The wider use of environmental catalysts in future industrially energy-related field will bring the requirement of essentially reducing the noble metals contents towards saving resources and lowering cost of catalyst. Especially, it is useful for small engines in hybrid cars and the system using general purpose engines such as farm engine, motorcycles and satellite electric resource etc. For this, we examined a newly developed core-shell type support in CeO2-ZrO2 system as a sub-catalyst for low content noble metal doped catalyst. It is found that the core-shell structured CeO2/ZrO2 leads to better activity even for as low content as 0.1 wt.% metal catalyst than previous general CeO2 and CeO2-ZrO2.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

エンジン等燃焼排ガスや燃焼器からの排ガス浄化は、大気環境保全の観点から不可欠な技術であるが、そこで使用する触媒には貴金属が大量に用いられる。そのため、他の分野でのパラジウム、ロジウム、白金等の将来的な利用を妨げているとも言われており、一方、排気処理触媒の新規学術研究は十分には進んでいない。研究代表者は、排ガス浄化において高度酸素貯蔵能を発現するセリアジルコニアを世界で初めて開発し、実用化され、以後長期に利用されてきた。この系の研究は学術性が低いとの評価を受けることがある。しかるに性能面で貴金属/セリアジルコニア系を超える排ガス浄化触媒は存在しない。この現状で低貴金属量触媒を新たに開発した。
