Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the Akan-Shiranuka area of Hokkaido, male brown bears with a larger home range size have a higher corn utilization rate than females, and 81% of males use it. Many extermination of bears as a result of invasions into crop fields by bears occurred in the southwestern (peripheral) part of the area. Bears in the northeastern (core) part and the western (surrounding) part are moving into the southwestern (peripheral) part. As a result of continued extermination of bears, the population density of female bears was lower in the southwestern part than the northeastern part of the population. It is necessary to exterminate most of the population in order to reduce the invasion only by extermination, which is not realistic from the viewpoint of population conservation. It is necessary to take non-lethal measures to prevent the bears from becoming problem individuals by implementing control such as installing an electric fence.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
