Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined the effects of exposure to advertisements, particularly TV commercials on the purchase and consumption of foods and beverages, and the related process. We conducted a content analysis of food and beverage TV commercials and a survey targeting parents of elementary school students in four countries (Japan, Australia, Korea, and the U.S.). We proposed a method of content analysis to capture advertising techniques that can be used for food and beverages internationally, and we used this method to identify the characteristics of advertisements for food and beverages. In addition, the study indicated factors that may mediate or moderate the process from exposure to unhealthy food and beverage advertisements to the promotion or suppression of purchasing behavior (purchasing behavior is associated with the suppression of health behavior), as well as other factors involved in the promotion or suppression of purchasing behavior.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

食品の分類や栄養強調表示の基準などは国・地域によって異なる場合があり、国際的な食品規格を用いた本研究の内容分析の方法は、今後の食品・飲料の広告の国際比較研究に応用できると考えられる。また、広告技法の中でも特に「栄養強調表示」(「カロリーゼロ」など)に注目し、この技法を用いた広告への接触が4か国を通じて子どもの保健行動を抑制し得るリスクを実証的に示し、各国でこうしたリスクを低減する個人差要因・環境要因への示唆も得られた。個人差要因・環境要因に関する示唆は、今後の家庭や学校での啓発活動や教育への基礎的な知見の1つとなることが期待される。
