Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examined the impact of oral health intervention on overall health in children living with HIV, by comparing HIV-positive intervention group, HIV-positive control group, and HIV-negative control group. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in Phnom Penh City with children living with HIV. They attended oral hygiene seminars together with their caregivers and performed daily oral care for approximately 2 years. The intervention group showed a positive longitudinal association between number of caries in permanent teeth and viral load, also between salivary flow and quality of life. Results of the intervention suggest that improved oral hygiene may be associated with improved overall health status in children living with HIV.
