Outline of Final Research Achievements

Brain can monitor an increase or a decrease in blood glucose levels, by neurons called glucose sensing neurons. Glucose sensing neurons regulate glucose metabolisms in peripheral tissues to maintain normal glucose levels. Obesity attenuates the function of glucose sensing neurons and increases blood glucose levels. This project tried to find its molecular mechanism. We found a molecule, which can improve the function of glucose sensing neurons in obese mice. The molecule has a therapeutic effect on the diabetic hyperglycemia.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

肥満は糖尿病の原因としてよく知られています。現在までに様々な研究が行われ、なぜ肥満が糖尿病の発症に関与するか調べられてきました。しかし、その多くは筋肉、肝臓、脂肪組織などの末梢臓器に着目して研究が進んできました。一方で、脳の研究は末梢臓器ほど進んでいません。この研究成果は脳による血糖値のモニタリングという特殊な機能について、その分子メカニズムを明らかにしたものです。今回発見したタンパク質を利用して糖尿病の治療薬を開発することが期待されます。
