Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigated the Kokumoto Formation, Kazusa Group to reconstruct high-resolution paleoenvironmental changes troughout ca. 790-760 ka. Multiple data, such as organic matter composition and inorganic elemental composition, show characteristic variations that are consistent with glacial-interglacial cycle. In addition, such data may suggest shorter-term paleoenvironmental changes, which possibly affected the marine benthic communities including the preliminary data consideration.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

気候変動の将来影響を長期予測するためには、過去の気候変動の実態を解明することが不可欠である。中でも、約79~76万年前の間氷期は現在の間氷期と地球軌道要素が類似していることが指摘されており、当時の気候変動の詳細解明が急務となっている。
また、本研究で対象とした地層(上総層群国本層)は、千葉県市原市田淵の「千葉セクション」と呼ばれるセクションを含んでいる。「千葉セクション」は、地質時代(具体的には更新世の前期と中期の境界)を定める国際標準模式地の候補地となっている。したがってこの意味では、「千葉セクション」を含む国本層の研究を実施した本研究は、社会的な意義も大きい。
