| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study tested a following hypothesis through the comparison of two cases of Map Ta Phut in Thailand and Myitsone Dam in Myanmar.
1) Resource rents, benefiting social elites, widen the social divide in a local scale; 2) the local tension becomes national conflict through the "environmental" civil society; 3) local resource conflict has a potential implications for nation-state building in national-scale.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
タイやミャンマーについては、資源管理や紛争に着目して多くの研究がなされているものの、こうしたローカルの動きが国レベルにスケールアップする様については、十分な研究がなされていない。本研究では「環境」市民社会に焦点を当てて、こうしたスケールアップのメカニズムについて検討を試みた。
市民社会の成熟はタイやミャンマーの民主化にとって重要である。とはいえそれは環境NGOが活発になることで達成されるわけではない。本事例が示すのは、市民社会の成熟の難しさであり、今後のメコン地域の民主化の一助となるよう心がけた。
