Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim of this research is to reconsider the concepts of “human” and “nature” through an examination of modern Japanese philosophy. This research revealed three main points: first, based on Watsuji Tetsuro’s ethics, human beings are involved in both an individual and a social existence, in which their environment is an integral part. Watsuji’s ethics consider reproduction of social forms essential. Second, Nishida Kitaro, in contrast to Watsuji, from the perspective of evolution theory, thinks that the creative world lies at our foundation and that the good lies in taking part in the creation of this world. We can rename this unpredictable and uncontrollable foundation as “nature,” which destroys the repetition of existing social forms through individuals. Finally, Miki Kiyoshi’s philosophy contends that the human ethics shown in Watsuji and the natural creation shown in Nishida are fundamentally in conflict with each other.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
