Outline of Annual Research Achievements

我々の宇宙には、暗黒物質と呼ばれる物質が多く存在することが知られているが、現在までに我々が知り得る暗黒物質に関する知見は、重力相互作用を持ち、電磁気相互作用が十分弱いといった程度であり、その正体は大きな謎に包まれている。暗黒物質を説明できる粒子の候補として、これまでに多くの例が挙げられると同時に、それらを発見するための実験の提案が為されてきた。ところが、もし暗黒物質の質量が非常に軽かった場合、個々の暗黒物質の持つエネルギーもまた非常に小さいために、一般にはその発見が難しくなる。我々はこういった質量領域に着目し、特に固体内の集団励起モードを用いた暗黒物質の検出法について調べた。
磁性体と呼ばれる、各原子サイトに局所化された電子のスピンが規則的に並んだ固体の内部では、それぞれのスピンの方向が基底状態からわずかにずれ、そのずれが波として伝搬するスピン波のモードが存在する。こういったモードは励起に必要なエネルギーが比較的小さいことに加え、スピントロニクスなどといった技術的応用に対する関心から、近年におけるその検出手法の発展が目覚ましい。そこで、アクシオンや暗黒光子といった軽い暗黒物質候補が存在する場合を考えると、磁性体がこれらの暗黒物質を吸収することによるスピン波のモードの励起を暗黒物質の検出に利用できる。我々は、以上に説明した過程の発生頻度を見積もることにより、暗黒物質候補の質量や結合の強さに制限を与え、現存する制限を上回る結果が得られる可能性を指摘した。我々の計算は量子力学的な定式化に基づいており、終状態の励起モードは、スピン波を量子化したマグノンであると捉えることができる。我々は引き続き、複数のマグノンや、その他フォノンなどといった集団励起モードを含む別種の過程についても考慮に入れて研究を続けている。
