Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は, 観測データの解析および領域海洋モデル(ROMS)による感度実験を通じて, インド洋ダイポールモード(IOD)に伴う塩分の経年変動の特徴およびメカニズム, さらにそれが水温や海洋循環に与える影響について明らかにすることを目指す。今年度(令和元年度)は前年度までに得られた, ROMSを用いた感度実験によって得られた結果を2本の論文として取りまとめ, 投稿・改訂作業を進めた。これらの論文はKido et al. (2019a, b)としてJournal of Geophysical Research Oceans誌に受理された。さらに, 領域海洋モデルを用いた感度実験から見出された, 塩分偏差が海面水温に与えるインパクトの影響に関する結果の妥当性を検証するため, 観測された水温・塩分データに対して線形回帰・特異値分解といった統計的手法を適用した。その結果, 「IODに伴う塩分偏差は, SST偏差に対し負のフィードバックとして能動的な役割を果たす」という, モデルによる実験と整合的な結果が得られた。さらに, 水温変動に対し塩分変動が寄与する役割を定量化するためのより一般的なアプローチとして, 線形インバースモデルを用いた新たな手法を開発し,その有用性を確認した。これらの一連の手法は他海盆の塩分変動にも幅広く応用可能であり, エルニーニョ・南方振動(ENSO)をはじめとする熱帯域の気候モードにおいて塩分が果たす役割について系統的・統一的な理解を得るための強力なツールとなりうるものである。
