Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究課題の目的は,天王星や海王星などの氷惑星内部を想定した条件下で主成分である水-メタン系の高温高圧実験を行い,メタンの融点や分子解離条件を決定し,メタン分子の分子解離により生じると考えられるダイヤモンドの生成条件を実験的に明らかにすることである。氷惑星内部条件での水-メタン系の高温高圧挙動を明らかにし,氷惑星のマントル構造を検討することは,氷惑星の内部構造モデルの構築のみならず,天王星と海王星がもつ非双極的かつ非軸対称という特異な内部磁場の発現原因を推定する上でも重要である。
本研究では,昨年度から今年度においてC-O-H系におけるメタン分子の分子解離条件,及びメタン分子の分子解離によるダイヤモンドの生成条件を解明するため,炭酸ガスレーザー加熱ダイヤモンドアンビルセルと抵抗加熱ダイヤモンドアンビルセルを用いた高温高圧実験を精力的に行った。試料の評価は,主に放射光X線回折(高エネルギー加速器研究機構)と高温高圧その場ラマン分光により行い,回収試料の微細組織観察には高分解能電子顕微鏡を用いた。これらの手法により,本研究は10-90 GPaという広い圧力領域において,C-O-H系でのダイヤモンドの生成条件がメタン単成分で報告されている条件よりも有意に低温側へシフトすることが明らかにした。これら結果より,氷惑星のマントルでは,その最上部においてもメタン分子の分子解離によるダイヤモンドの生成が起こり得ることが示された。
