| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Probabilistic seismic hazard maps, which visualize the probability of a seismic intensity of 6 or greater over the next 30 years, are difficult to understand for the general public. Besides, the uncertainty of the indicated values is very large. If the residents accept those probabilities as "dangerous safety information," such as "areas with low probability of disasters may have few disasters," they may even bring the opposite effect.
In this study, we found that a narrative approach in which people in various positions express disaster situations in their own words is much more effective in communicating risks to others, rather than presenting data with uncertainty itself on a map to promote awareness of disasters.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
社会的意義： 発生日時を予測できない地震学の限界を踏まえて地震学コミュニティは，今後30年での地震発生確率を公表してきたが，確率は一般市民には理解されにくい．本研究では，さまざまな立場の人が，その人の言葉や行動で災害時を表現する方がはるかによく他者に伝達することができることを明らかにし，全国各地の学校や自主防災組織で防災教育として導入されるに至っている．
学術的意義：地域住民によるナラティヴ・アプローチは，情報の受け手だった住民が今度は発信者となることを示している．これは「災害情報の受け手に伝わりやすい情報をいかに伝達するかを研究する」従来の災害情報論の枠組みを根底から問い直すものである．
