Outline of Final Research Achievements

We examined the risk factors for low bone mineral density and polymorphisms related to bone metabolism in female athletes. Outcome 1) Female athletes with the bb type of BsmⅠ polymorphism in the vitamin D receptor gene reported that bone density may not decrease even with abnormal menstruation (Hwang et al. 2019). Outcome 2) We reported that female athletes with ApaⅠ polymorphism aa were more susceptible to low bone density risk factors than AA + Aa (Hwang et al. 2020).
These results suggest that the effects of risk factors on bone mineral density differ depending on the female athlete's sport, and that the possibility of assessing the sensitivity of bone mineral risk factors using bone metabolism-related genes (ApaⅠ polymorphism) was suggested.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

女性アスリートの低骨密度に関する環境的因子には月経異常だけでなく、BMI、初経年齢、疲労骨折歴や参加する競技種目など多数報じられている。一方、骨密度は遺伝的要因、即ち遺伝子多型の差異といったパラメーターによって影響を受ける可能性が報告されている。しかし、遺伝子多型解析の結果は、主に閉経後の女性を検討しており、アスリートの骨に対するリスク因子については殆ど見当たらない。本研究は、女性アスリートの骨に関わる環境的・遺伝的指標を分析し、リスクの原因究明に繋がる可能性を示した。女性のスポーツ・競技活動における骨疾患のリスクを把握したトレーニングへの応用を広く提示することに社会的意義がある。
