| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study investigates the photographs of victims of war, crime, and disasters displayed in museums, art galleries, and international art festivals. It examines the exhibition methods and the socio-political contexts and interests embedded within the exhibition spaces, considering aesthetic and ethical issues.
The results reveal that displaying pre-mortem photographs along with materials that convey the lives of the victims, rather than as anonymous victims, not only avoids the spectacle of death but also serves as evidence to remember and reflect on past events with empathy towards the individuals. Such displays are based on a critical examination of spectacular exhibitions. Furthermore, the study discusses the ethical issues and cultural significance of making the victims' deaths invisible.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の調査対象である博物館や美術館は、世界中に存在する公共施設で、教育の場であるとともにツーリズムの対象でもある。それぞれの施設は地域の社会やコミュニティと深いつながりを持つとともに、死者の写真展示をめぐる美学的そして倫理的問題意識は世界に共通する課題である。実際に死の視覚表象の問題についての研究が各国で蓄積されつつある中で、甚大な自然災害が多発し、被爆国でもある日本の事例についての学会発表、論文・書籍の出版、そして国際研究集会や美術展の開催による本研究成果の国際的発信には狭義の芸術学を超えた社会的意義が認められるだろう。
