Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to elucidate the mechanism of customer value creation in small independent local cinemas by comparing cinemas in Japan and the UK. I have mainly researched on cinemas in Japan during this period by conducting interviews with managers of cinemas, fieldwork in cinemas, and literature reviews.
Successful cinemas have some similarities. Firstly, cinema managers have a unique philosophy pertaining to the cinema business and their customer values. Secondly, such cinemas show films to their customers in unique contexts created by them. Lastly, as a consequence, they have unique loyal customers.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

一般的にチェーン店などの大規模ビジネスは商品やサービスをより安価で効率よく顧客に提供することに優れているが、画一的な価値の提供になりがちである。経済は人々の生活において非常に重要であり、そこで提供される価値のあり方は人々の生活の質、ひいては人生そのものに多大な影響を与える。
本研究は、地方の独立系小規模映画館の価値創造のあり方を研究テーマとしているが、広く捉えれば「大都市」「大規模」に対して「地方」「小規模」、さらに言い換えると、「一元化」に対して「多様化」の社会そのもののあり方を科学的に研究することに焦点を置いている。
