| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research was to elucidate the actual state of Kabuki performances in the late Tokugawa period, and to clarify--with specific examples--how the print culture, formed by the commercial publications linked to the Kabuki performances, developed into an urban culture.
My research includes an exploration of the actual state of Kabuki performances at the time, based on internal theater documents, and a survey study of Kabuki banzuke (playbills), which were published in accordance with the performances. The results of my research on Kabuki banzuke were reflected in the databases of the institutions that held the materials. In addition, I extracted information on the casts of Kabuki plays at the end of the Tokugawa period from Kabuki performance records, and constructed a database of Kabuki performance chronology according to the casts. Furthermore, I published some of my research results as A History of Information Culture in Edo Kabuki (2021) from Kyuko Shoin.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
幕末は近世出版文化が最盛期にあたる時期であり、歌舞伎興行と出版の関係性も非常に密接であると考えられる。しかし、近世後期以降の大芝居の興行形態については、現存する劇場内部資料が乏しいために実態が解明されておらず、したがって興行に付随する出版文化事象も推測の域から出ていないというのが現状である。
本研究では演劇・日本史・文化・文学といった複数の視点から研究を行うことにより、複合的な考察を深め、さらに歌舞伎興行と周辺の文化事象の関連性に注目することで、今後の諸分野の研究活動に及ぼす成果は大きい。加えて、これまで推測されていた歌舞伎興行と関連出版物についての連動性についても、明らかにすることができた。
